Probiotics and SIBO

Probiotics are one of the best tools we have to reduce the symptoms of SIBO.

“But if extra bacteria in the small intestines causes SIBO, then why should I take more? Won’t that make the problem worse?”

I’ve worked with countless patients who were wrongly told by their nutritionists or doctors that they shouldn’t take probiotics if they had SIBO. It comes down to a misunderstanding of how probiotics actually work - because these practitioners mistakenly believe that probiotics work by colonizing the gut, and therefore they think that giving probiotics to their patients will make SIBO worse.

These practitioners don’t understand that most probiotics don’t survive in the GI tract. Most probiotics simply die on as soon as they come in contact with stomach acid, digestive enzymes and our immune system. Most of the rest die farther down in the GI tract before they are able to colonize. The key is understanding that the dead probiotic bacteria exert powerful effects on the body. When the probiotic bacteria die, they are broken up into fragments, and these bits and pieces change the way our immune system acts, and they also have direct anti-microbial effects. In my practice, I have seen mild cases of SIBO be completely resolved only by using probiotic treatments.

Probiotics Help You Detox by Binding Toxins

A final reason that probiotics work in conditions like SIBO is that they can protect the body from harmful compounds by binding them so they can be removed. Lowering the toxic load in the gut allows all aspects of the system to work better.

The probiotics do this because bacterial cell walls have the ability to grab on to toxins. This occurs with compounds like LPS, preventing inflammation and damage to our intestinal cells. It turns out that probiotics are actually able to bind and help remove a huge variety of other toxins ranging from heavy metals, to mold toxins even endocrine disrupting compounds like BPA and phthalates.

Because certain probiotics are better than others at specific actions, I recommend using a broad assortment of probiotics to take advantage of as many of these mechanisms as possible - rather than relying on a single strain or type of probiotic.

Benefits of using Probiotics in SIBO

  • Probiotics reduce symptoms of SIBO

  • Probiotics decontaminate the small intestine of problematic bacteria.

  • Probiotics help antibiotics to work better.

  • Probiotics are safe and cost effective.

  • Probiotics work to heal the gut lining so that SIBO is less likely to come back.

Research Supporting Probiotic Use in SIBO

“In conclusion, this systematic review proved that the probiotics supplementation was beneficial for patients with SIBO. The probiotics therapy was an effective option for SIBO decontamination, reduction in H2 concentration, and abdominal pain relief.”

“This is the first study that prospectively demonstrated superior clinical efficacy of probiotics in patients with IBS with SIBO. Analysis also showed considerable benefit from probiotic intake regarding certain symptoms of patients with diarrhea-predominant and constipation-predominant IBS.”

“In patients with SIBO, S. boulardii CNCM I-745 associated with dietary advice reduced bacterial overgrowth and improved digestive symptoms while restoring the intestinal microbiota.”
